La Bamba 20 Years

Postby Connie Lemos » Thu Jul 12, 2007 5:44 pm

Hello Fan's the 20TH anniversary of the Bio Pic of Ritchie's life will celebrate 20 years this July. The Family when asked by Taylor Hackford owner of New Visions the movie company that made the film if we would like a Hollywood Premiere or a "Home Town Premiere" we choose our premiere to be in our home town of Watsonville, CA.The date July 3,1987 what a night that was. Imagine Lou Diamond Phillips , Esai Morales, Rosana DeSoto, Director Luis Valdez , producer Daniel Valdez also Taylor Hackford and to many others to mention. I remember the line outside the theatre that night as Mama stepped out of her limo the look on her face. We were all so HAPPY. Ritchie was finally recieving his just reward. After the movie, the cast was called to the stage as each one was called so was their counterpart exsample when Esai was introduced they called up Bob. Irma's daughter Gloria portrayed her mother when she was introduced we were all so proud. What a proud moment for our family to see not only the actors but the actual family members altogether on stage. Mama there on stage next to Rosana. She looked at peace and so very proud of each and everyone of us. La Bamba was released nationally on July 24, 1987 . Hollywood Premiere, Yes ! La Bamba got one Red Carpet and all. Lou showed up wearing the Shiny Jacket he wore during the big concert in the movie and movie star's everywhere limo's lined the street. Another big night for Mama and the family. What wonderful memories it seems like a dream sometimes. If we didn't have a movie we could hold, I think I could believe it was. A special thank you to you Ritchie's Fan's for helping us his Family continue his legacy.

YAY to La Bamba- one of my all time favourite movies.
Which is 5 years older than me, haha.

I think I'll watch it sometime while I'm on holiday.

I thought this film was handled in a very sympathetic way, showing Ritchie as a charming young man with so much talent. These days this sort of film usually has a warts and all theme to it so it was to see something done gently. The ending still makes me crack though I just can't sit and watch it or Donna's face in the school, blaahhhh off I go.

Hi Connie,

I credit the film La Bamba with really introducing me to Ritchie, Buddy Holly, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson...A truly outstanding film that has stood the test of time! One thing that I enjoyed was Valdez' and Hackford's efforts to show what a strong family Ritchie came from, an effort that I wish the producer's of "The Buddy Holly Story" had also undertaken. That, and the attention to detail (Ritchie's stage outfits, the feeling that you were sort of peeking behind a curtain of time and actually watching Ritchie's life unfold, ect) were all quite striking to my impressionable young mind. Bravo!
